1981 – The start-up of his own photo store in Siegen was the beginning of a success story! In 1986 Reinhard Saal founded Foto + Kino Saal GmbH and ran the company with great success as managing director for many years, operating up to 15 retail outlets with minilabs. This business developed some years later into today’s company,  Minilabsysteme R. Saal GmbH. The company stores now employ a total of 25 persons. In Siegen and Dresden/Freital about 2.5 million prints are produced each year for our customers on Agfa minilabs. The print service in these stores is not just an over-the-counter business, as most of the print orders are placed online.


From 1989 the activities of the company increasingly moved towards the sale of minilabs. From 1995 machines were purchased, stored in rented premises, refurbished and offered for sale. In the year 2000 the company built its own facilities, increasing the area devoted to sales and refurbishing of minilabs to 1,500 m². This building too became too small, and a short time later a second plant had to be constructed so that today work and storage areas amounting to about 2,500 m² are available. The workforce of Minilabsysteme R. Saal GmbH also had to adapt to the growing business, and increased to its present level of 50 employees.

In 2006 Minilabsysteme R. Saal GmbH founded the company Minilab Factory GmbH based in Peiting. Its managing director is Robin Saal. He joined his father’s operations in 2000 and is recognised in the company as the number two manager after his father. In 2006 Reinhard Saal acquired the minilab production activities of the insolvent AGFA Photo GmbH (digital AGFA d-lab 1 and d-lab 2 minilabs). Since then the company has manufactured new minilabs itself. They are sold worldwide by Minilabsysteme R. Saal GmbH. Minilab Factory GmbH also supplies spare parts and service for all new Agfa d-labs 1 and 2. 16 persons are already employed by Minilab Factory.

In 2001 a further member of the family joined the company. Christina Saal initially worked in digital image manipulation and a photo lab. Soon after she took over the accounting work for the photo stores. Since last year she has been in charge of accounting for all business activities.

2007 sees the beginning of a further career. Tim Saal, the youngest of Reinhard Saal`s family, has started work in a digital photo lab. A successful career is assured!

Reinhard Saal can rest assured that his work will be continued. The future business of the company is in good hands with the junior partners.
